Synopsis
A lottery ticket + donuts = love in this steamy new fake dating romance from beloved author Denise Williams.
Sybil Sweet has always been lucky, but lately she can’t catch a break. After years of bouncing from job to job in search of something that feels right and from man to man in search of something special, Sybil is worried that she’s the directionless, floundering daughter her family thinks she is. All she really wants now is a little financial stability and carb comfort. Lucky for her, she’s got just enough in the bank to buy a lottery ticket, and the late-night donut store is open.
Kieran Anderson put his dreams of becoming a doctor on hold to take over running his family’s bakery, and after fighting a losing battle to save the place, he’s exhausted, broke, and no closer to getting back to school. But when a whirlwind of a woman sweeps in late one night, flirty energy gives way to more…until she runs out the next morning, leaving behind her winning lottery ticket.
Lucky for Kieran, his attempt to return the ticket looks like a grand romantic gesture and goes viral, sending sales through the roof. In an effort to keep the store afloat and to convince Sybil’s family she can make good relationship choices, they agree to fake a relationship for three months. Even with hundreds of millions of dollars, finding each other might end up being the sweetest bit of luck for both of them.
My Thoughts
Just Our Luck by Denise Williams had everything I would want in a Romantic comedy. It had a great friend group with the female lead, Sybil. The family that the male lead, Kieran, had was amazing to read as well. And the banter and chemistry between Kieran and Sybil were nothing but perfect as they both were able to play off each other well. It was also nice to see Kieran fall first for Sybil. You don’t see a lot of books where the male lead is the one to fall first.
But as you read Just Our Luck, you will see why he was the one who fell first. Sybil doesn’t hold herself in high regard since her family and friends tend to tell stories where she messed something up or makes her the joke. Her family (namily, her mom) is the one who does it the most. She doesn’t mean to do it in a mean way, but she doesn’t see how, when she tells those types of stories, how it affects Sybil. But don’t worry too much about it, as the book does have a good ending when it comes to that.
Now, the thing I didn’t like was when Sybil made a mistake when she was trying to be helpful for Kieran. He was a HUGE ass, and yes I get this is used to get to the third act breakup, but this just didn’t feel like him and sit well with me. If he knew all along, he didn’t want to do this, he should have come to that choice and not taken it out on her when it came to that, he wouldn’t have been able to do it anymore.
Now, Just Our Luck was your typical Romantic Comedy, but with how Kieran acted and how Sybil’s family was to her, I am giving this book a three-and-a-half-star rating. The spice in this book is there, as this is a three-chili pepper spice level. Just Our Luck is available wherever you get your books.
